Tool #11


1. What are your favorite tools you now have in your personal technology toolbox? Briefly describe a particular activity that you will plan for your students using at least one of these new tools. 
I like forms in Google Docs. I can use them for questioning and assessing students quickly. The kids like using the forms because they are new. I also like the links for making videos, they are easy for the third graders to use.  I used Animoto to have the kids make short videos that emphasis the contributions of our  historical people third grade is responsible for teaching. The kids then emailed the videos to their parents easily.


2. How have you transformed your thinking about the learning that will take place in your classroom? How has your vision for your classroom changed? Are you going to need to make any changes to your classroom to accommodate the 21st Century learner? I think I do a great job of integrating technology into my daily lesson plans.  I need to work on  synchronous learning. I would like to have my kids work globally more often in a way the enriches their progress. I will definitely make changes in my classroom. Having more devices makes it easier to integrate technology even more.

3. Were there any unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you
No I wasn't surprised by anything. I enjoyed the course the first time. I am a little disappointed by the fact that the district demands that teachers differentiate for our students but when it comes to staff development teachers do not get the same respect. Many of us took this course but were made to do it again with our schools. Some of us have taken all the library courses starting in 21 things.
I do enjoy these courses and of course I learn something new each time I complete them. I also go back to my blogs to refresh my memory of sites I want to use in class.

Tool #10

1.Of the three things I want students to understand about digital citizenship is that safety is the most important aspect of going out on the web. Therefore they must know how to keep the personal information secure. Next I will make sure they are responsible, considerate and civil in their communications. The last thing is being able to validate information. Students must be taught that internet sources are not equal and they should not believe what they read until they have evaluated the source of the site.
2. I have uses the videos on Atomic Leaning and will continue to use them.
3.In order to teach digital citizenship to my students I will use the lessons on our library page, Atomic Learning, Easy Tech, and Brainpop. I will begin by brainstorming what students think D.C. is then watch brainpop. After that we would list things we think might cause problems when we use technology. We would then look at our district's materials. I would end with lessons on identifying reliable resources.
4. For parents I will include a short lesson during curriculum night.

Tool # 9

  1. As with any lesson plan the tool used for products or instruction should enable the child to understand the concept being taught and help the student synthesize the information. We have a vast amount of technology available to use that enhances our teaching and engages the students. Students must see the technology as another tool for learning.
  2. Students must be held accountable in any activity the participate in because each activity teachers plan is used to increase learning and promote success.

          has some great video clips, a quick way for the students to observe different animals and write their observations. Student can be held accountable by reflecting in  a journal or blogging. Both sites can be used as a focus at the beginning of a lesson, in a center for review, or as a resource.
      http://www.tutpup.com/    a great way to start  synchronous projects. Students love competing with other children around the world. Students can be held responsible by recording their sessions in their math spirals.
  4. ABC Cursive, iLearn Solar System , and BrainPop are great apps. iLearn and BrainPop stations enable the students to learn at their own pace and to research self generated questions. The cursive station enables students to work at their own pace. Technology stations look like all other stations: there are directions for use and care of materials, directions for the task, objective for the outcome of the task, and a way to record learning.
  5. Socrative is a great way to use both devices. Teachers/students can generate questions to research and respond to. Videos enable students to document their learning, record readers theater, science labs. Teachers can set up Skype with other classrooms so that students can observe and participate in lessons that re-mediate or challenge.

Tool 8

I am so excited to get more devices for our classrooms. Technology is a huge part of instruction and independent work. Having more equipment will definitely motivate the students.
Two things I've learned about the devices are they will need to be on the cart at specific times so the district can adjust configurations. Also we need to sync the devices to our laptops. Last the students must learn another way to sign in. 
Ways to implement our new technology tools:
   Reading workstation: students can access ebooks, use interactive reading sites, and Odyssey
   Math workstations
   Students can use iPAD and Mini Dells to create technology based products for learning menus
   Can be used as a research station 
    App for cursive writing- station for handwriting practice.
    Science workstation to visit interactive science websites.
    Dictate stories or answers to questions (modifications)
    Record independent reading
   Make short videos that teach content
   Join one of the global collaborative projects and work during centers
  Create a global collaborative project
   Make instructional videos on classroom units
Managing the devices will be the same as all other workstations. Students and parents will sign the release form then follow the directions for use. The devices will be workstations with specific rules for use and putting devices up;

Tool 7

Asynchronous and synchronous projects, wow. I am starting really small and hoping to grow into world wide learning. My projects were mentioned in the last two tools but they actually fit here. 
Content objective: students to collaborate, revise, edit and produce a published piece. 
Using Google Docs word processing 
The third grade students will create a rough draft in Google Docs then share their writing with a fifth grade student. The fifth grade student will revise the draft in blue. The third grader will choose whether or not to implement the revisions or make their own changes. Last the fifth grader will edit and the third grader will make changes then publish and share.
The final pieces were printed and shared. The project took place in March.

Tool 6

   Google Docs, Wallwisher, and Skype are three of the collaborative conversation sites I've used in the classroom. One of the workstations include a slideshow that students work together on. Each group accesses the slideshow, reads the directions and works on their part of the slideshow. Wallwisher can be used anytime during a unit. It is quick and easy to post a question for discussion and have the kids respond. My kids use just their first name. The answers can be used as assessments for comprehension. My goal this year was to use      Skype as a way to bring working parents into the classroom. I set up a schedule where parents could read a loud to the class from a computer anywhere. My hope was working parents could use part of their lunch break to read a story to the kids on Skype. Sadly this did not catch on the way I had hoped but I will continue to try because I like the idea.
  I believe all technology encourages more participation from kids due to the fact that the activities usually  have the kids seeing, hearing, and doing.

Tool 5

This is one of my favorite activities. I like the variety of products kids can easily produce. Several of the sites are activities our third grade team uses in our learning menus. The kids have made Animoto movies, trading cards, magazine covers, Glogster posters, and Wordle: word clouds. this year my kids are sharing their writing through Google Docs with our fifth grade students. The fifth graders are revising and editing with the third graders. In the past I've had a direction page for each site in their workstation. After the 11 tools project I think I will try having the kids watch the YouTube tutorials. I think watching the videos will be more motivating.
The products can be a great "hook" at the beginning or anytime during a lesson. Sometimes it is difficult to find the right content for topics we teach. Creating a short video, book, or word cloud with the specific information we need can be more efficient.
